The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has postponed its governorship primary election earlier scheduled for Thursday, shifting the exercise to Friday, May 22, 2026.
The postponement was announced in an official statement issued by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Abdulwaheed Babatunde.
“The APC Governorship Primary, earlier scheduled to hold today, Thursday, 21st May 2026, has been postponed.
“The new date for the Governorship Primary is Friday, 22nd May 2026. All aspirants and party faithful are advised to take note,” the statement read.
No official reason was given for the change of date.
The state party chairman, Sunday Fagbemi, confirmed the development while speaking with journalists, saying the directive came from the party’s national leadership.
“We don’t have details for the cancellation other than the fact that the team from the national office came and instructed that the election be held tomorrow,” he said.
Meanwhile, just hours before the postponement, eight governorship aspirants reportedly stepped down in favour of Abdulfatai Seriki, who is believed to be the preferred successor of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Seriki had on Wednesday evening held a strategic meeting with fellow aspirants and key stakeholders in the state, where they reportedly agreed to support his candidature in the interest of unity and continuity of the governor’s legacy.
Those said to have withdrawn their ambitions in his favour include Salako Oluwatoyin, Captain Ahmad Mahmoud, Wale Sulaiman, Mohammed Bio, Toyin Alabi, Aisha Patigi, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, and Speaker of the House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi.
The meeting reportedly ended with a commitment to party unity, issue-based engagement, and a peaceful primary process aimed at strengthening the APC in Kwara State.
Sources also suggest that more aspirants may still withdraw ahead of the rescheduled primary.
The development comes amid ongoing APC governorship and legislative primaries across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several states already producing candidates through either consensus arrangements or competitive contests.
In some northern states, including Katsina and Zamfara, governors secured tickets through consensus arrangements, while other primaries have produced mixed outcomes marked by both harmony and internal disputes.
The Kwara governorship primary is expected to draw significant attention as the party prepares to select its flagbearer for the 2027 election.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is currently serving his second term in office.
