The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, has appointed a 13-member interim National Working Committee (NWC) to steer the party’s affairs.
Wabara said the decision was taken in line with the PDP constitution, following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified the Ibadan National Convention, which he noted created a leadership vacuum within the party.
The interim NWC is headed by former National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki.
The decision was reached at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by the Turaki-led bloc of the party at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Monday.
Prominent stakeholders at the meeting included Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, former Minister of Special Duties Tanimu Turaki, former Niger State Governor Babangida Muazu, former Information Minister Prof. Jerry Gana, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and former Minister of Women Affairs Zainab Maina, among others.
The group also declared the Abuja convention that produced the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee null and void.
Citing provisions of the PDP constitution, they maintained that a caretaker or interim leadership is required in the event of a vacuum and urged the BoT to act accordingly—a step the board has now taken.
Supreme Court ruling
The development follows a Supreme Court judgment delivered on Thursday, which dismissed an appeal filed by the Turaki-led NWC that emerged from the Ibadan convention.
In the lead judgment, Justice Stephen ruled that the Ibadan convention, held in November last year, violated an earlier order of the Federal High Court delivered by Justice James Omotosho, rendering its outcomes invalid.
‘No more factions’
Reacting to the ruling, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who leads the opposing faction, declared that the judgment had effectively ended factional divisions within the PDP.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Wike said, “The Supreme Court judgment has now made it known there is only one PDP. We no longer hear about factions. Faction does not exist anymore in the party.”
He reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led NWC, which emerged from the March 2026 Abuja convention backed by his camp.
The latest developments underscore the deepening leadership dispute within the PDP, despite claims from rival blocs that the Supreme Court ruling has resolved the crisis.
