A presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, on Monday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the state of the nation and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed this after a closed-door meeting with Jonathan, which he attended alongside a delegation of South-East political leaders. The delegation included serving and former lawmakers, as well as former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the former Anambra State governor said the visit was part of ongoing consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Notable South-East leaders have come in consultation with our respected former president. That is essentially the purpose, discussions around the 2027 elections and the broader situation in Nigeria,” Obi said.
The meeting forms part of Obi’s wider engagement with key political figures across the country as he builds momentum ahead of the ADC presidential primary.
Last week, Obi—who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023—visited Bauchi, where he held talks with Governor Bala Mohammed alongside other South-East leaders.
Speaking after that meeting, Obi said his consultations are aimed at fostering national unity and strengthening cross-regional collaboration.
“My purpose is to seek the support and cooperation of His Excellency and stakeholders in Bauchi and the North-East in our effort to unite this country. We need a cohesive nation to build a better future for our children.
“Nigeria cannot continue on its current path. We are heading in the wrong direction and must change course for the benefit of all. That is why we are engaging stakeholders—to build a new Nigeria that works for everyone,” he added.
