Government school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved demands, disrupting academic activities across the territory.
A visit to several schools, including LEA Primary School in Area 10, Garki, and Government Science Technical College in Area 3, Garki, revealed empty classrooms and deserted premises, with no teachers or students present.
The strike follows a directive issued by the FCT Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which instructed primary and secondary school teachers to withdraw their services from Monday.
In a communiqué jointly signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, the union said the decision was reached after an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting.
The meeting reviewed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on March 11, which lapsed on March 29 without any response from authorities.
The union said the strike became necessary due to the continued silence of the government on teachers’ demands, despite worsening economic conditions affecting workers in the FCT.
