The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, expressed no regrets on Sunday about zoning the party’s presidential ticket to the South-East for the 2027 election.
Abure also reaffirmed the party’s continued commitment to supporting Ndigbo in realizing their goal of leading the nation in the future.
He made these remarks at a rally organized by Labour Party members from the South-East, ahead of the Abuja Area Council election scheduled for next year.
While addressing the large turnout of aspirants, Abure assured them that the party would not impose candidates. He urged the zonal leaders to prioritize unity and work towards realigning with other regions if they hope to secure a presidential victory in 2027.
“Before the 2023 general election, I mistakenly believed that the South-East was not united. But when Peter Obi joined the party and I had the privilege of campaigning for him across the country, I came to realize that the Igbos are the most united, industrious, hardworking, and fearless people.
“That’s why today, despite all challenges, I have no regrets about zoning the presidential ticket to the South-East. We made that decision with courage in the 2023 general election. However, I believe the Igbos must now revisit their strategies. They need to realign more with other sections of the country and ensure strong, united leadership.”
Abure assured the South-East that the Labour Party remains fully committed to supporting Ndigbo’s future ambitions of leading Nigeria.
The Labour Party Chairman also emphasized that the party has no anointed candidate, guaranteeing that the upcoming primaries will be free, fair, and credible.
“During the upcoming election in the Federal Capital Territory, it will be a contest between the Labour Party and others,” he said. “The challenge facing Nigeria and other political parties today is that leaders often attempt to undermine the will of the people. As National Chairman of the Labour Party, I am determined to prevent this within our ranks.”
He concluded by reaffirming that the party’s members will have the final say in selecting the party’s candidates.
