Argentine footballer loses wife, two children in Venezuela quakes

The wife and two children of Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo have died after powerful twin earthquakes struck Venezuela, his club confirmed on Sunday.

Trejo, who plays for second-division side Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, spent three days searching for his wife, Yanina, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa, before rescue workers recovered their bodies, according to US media reports.

“Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira deeply mourns the irreparable loss of our player’s wife and children,” the club said in an Instagram post accompanied by a photograph of the family.

The 38-year-old defender was attending a training camp in Caracas when earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck on Wednesday evening, according to CNN.

He immediately returned to his home in La Guaira — the state hardest hit by the disaster — to what his brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, described as “a horrific scene.”

“He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been,” Ardiles told CNN.

Venezuelan authorities said nearly 1,500 people have died, while tens of thousands remain unaccounted for as search and rescue operations continue.
