Russia claimed on Tuesday that it had downed 55 Ukrainian drones overnight, with falling debris sparking a new fire at an oil depot in a border region.
The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that air defence systems intercepted and destroyed the drones in six different Russian regions over the course of the night. Six of the drones were shot down over the western Voronezh region, which borders Ukraine.
Voronezh Governor Alexander Gusev confirmed that debris from the drones ignited a “new fire” at a fuel depot, which had previously been hit by remnants of another downed drone six days earlier. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and Gusev stated that emergency services and firefighters were working to contain the flames and prevent further risk to the local population.
The incident comes as both Russia and Ukraine intensify hostilities in their ongoing conflict, with tensions rising ahead of the re-election of US President Donald Trump. Trump has vowed to halt critical military aid to Ukraine and push for a swift resolution to the war.
