Former federal controller of works killed in Kwara, police begin investigation

A retired Controller of Works at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, AbdulRazaq Ajani, has been brutally murdered in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.

Reports indicate that Ajani was attacked by four young men who trailed him to his residence in the Tanke area on January 1, 2025. The incident occurred around 3 pm, shortly after Ajani and his family returned from Offa, their hometown, where they had been celebrating the New Year.

The Kwara State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the incident on Thursday, stating, “Yes, the incident occurred. I can confirm that a retired Controller of Works was killed in the Tanke area on Wednesday. The police have intervened and launched an investigation into the matter.”

While no suspects have been arrested, Ejire-Adeyemi assured that an investigation was underway.

A family member, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the chilling moment when the assassins entered Ajani’s compound shortly after his arrival with his immediate family. “Four young men, aged between 18 and 22, carried out the attack,” the relative said.

Surveillance footage revealed two of the assailants standing by the gate, with one sipping water from a plastic bottle, while the other two entered the compound. Upon noticing the men from one of the sitting rooms, Ajani reportedly went to the door to meet them. They appeared to engage him in conversation before suddenly attacking, leaving him face down on the ground.

An eyewitness recounted the horror, saying, “Engineer Ajani was attacked and hacked to death in front of his wife and children as soon as they returned from Offa, where they had been for the holiday. Blood stains and his scattered brain were found at the scene.”

Many residents have gathered to sympathize with Ajani’s grieving family, while a team of police officers has visited the scene for further investigation.

Ajani, who retired from the Federal Ministry of Works four years ago, had resumed work in 2024 under a contract appointment at the ministry.
