On Monday, the Federal Executive Council approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the decision to State House correspondents after the council’s final meeting for 2024 at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

The University of Abuja, also known as UNIABUJA, was established in January 1988 under Decree No. 110 of 1992 (as amended) as a dual-mode institution offering both conventional and distance learning programs. The university began its academic operations in 1990 with the matriculation of its first cohort of students.

Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former military head of state, ruled the country from 1966 to 1975.

During his address, Minister Idris also announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved free nationwide transportation ahead of the Christmas holiday. He revealed that the Federal Government will launch free train services from December 20 to January 5, 2025.

Additionally, Idris stated that the Federal Executive Council will be on recess from December 18 until January 6, 2025.
