The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has linked banditry in Nigeria to the indiscriminate consumption of alcohol.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made the claim during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.
Adeyeye warned that excessive alcohol consumption poses serious risks to vital organs, including the brain, kidneys and liver.
She explained that the sale of alcohol in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles was approved decades ago but later became difficult to control. According to her, this prompted NAFDAC to enforce a ban on the sale of alcohol in containers of less than 200ml.
Adeyeye acknowledged that the ban had faced opposition from some quarters but said the concerns of Nigerians about the future and wellbeing of their children remained paramount.
