The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has refuted claims that it issued a directive to halt gas supply to power generating companies (GenCos).
In a statement released on Wednesday, the authority also denied instructing wholesale gas suppliers to cease supplying gas to companies due to unpaid debts.
The NMDPRA called reports alleging that it had ordered a stoppage of gas supply to GenCos over a N2 trillion debt “false and completely unfounded.”
“It has no connection to the information shared during a recent stakeholders’ engagement in Lagos, which involved the Authority, the OPTS, IPPG, and other oil and gas industry stakeholders,” the NMDPRA clarified.
The meeting’s purpose was to inform stakeholders about the requirements, opportunities, and benefits of implementing the wholesale supply license under sections 142 and 197 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.
This session followed a similar engagement held at the NMDPRA’s corporate headquarters in Abuja on November 27, 2024.
The Authority reassured stakeholders and the public that no such statement was made at the event or elsewhere. It urged everyone to disregard the false report, emphasizing that efforts are underway to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted supply of natural gas and petroleum products to end users, especially as the festive season and the new year approach.
