The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have introduced a new arrangement under which candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions will pay a one-off ₦4,000 fee to verify their O’Level results.
In a joint statement signed by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, on Tuesday, the examination bodies said the initiative was designed to ease the financial and administrative burden often faced by admission seekers who are required to verify their academic credentials repeatedly during the admission process.
Under the new arrangement, candidates whose admissions are regulated by JAMB will be required to verify their WAEC results only once through JAMB. The outcome of the verification will then be made available to the relevant tertiary institution for admission-related purposes.
The bodies said the ₦4,000 fee must be paid exclusively through the designated JAMB Verification Service platform and warned candidates against making payments directly to individual institutions.
Tertiary institutions have also been directed to use the verified results provided by JAMB for admission screening, processing and other administrative purposes.
As a result, institutions are not permitted to demand additional fees from candidates for re-verification of the same WAEC result.
The policy follows a series of meetings and consultations between JAMB and WAEC aimed at streamlining the verification process, cutting unnecessary costs and reducing the logistical challenges faced by candidates during admission.
Under the agreement, WAEC has authorised JAMB to share verification outcomes with relevant tertiary institutions for admission-related purposes.
“This arrangement is designed to ensure that candidates who have successfully verified their WASSCE O’ Level result through the Verification Service platform will not be required to repeat the same verification exercise,” the bodies said.
JAMB and WAEC said the initiative would also allow candidates to complete the verification process from the comfort of their homes or any internet-enabled location, reducing the need for repeated visits to tertiary institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres.
The two bodies urged candidates to take advantage of the new arrangement by completing their WASSCE O’Level verification through the JAMB-provided platform once. Once verified, the result will subsequently be made available to the institution where the candidate is seeking admission.
