President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba and Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti roads following worsening conditions that have left motorists stranded for hours and, in some cases, days.
In a statement on Tuesday, Francis Nwaze, spokesperson for the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the minister expressed deep concern over the deplorable state of the roads and the hardship faced by road users.
“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” Umahi was quoted as saying.
In response to the presidential directive, Umahi ordered immediate measures to address the situation.
He directed the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the extent of the damage and commence urgent remedial works.
According to the statement, the intervention was already underway as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, with ministry officials deployed to the affected areas.
While the team moved into Ekiti and Kogi states, Umahi travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to coordinate a similar intervention on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road.
The meeting in Benin is expected to involve key stakeholders, including representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as authorities seek immediate solutions to the challenges confronting motorists along the strategic corridor.
Nwaze said Umahi also accepted responsibility for the difficulties caused by the condition of the roads and apologised to commuters who have been stranded or delayed for several hours and days.
The minister assured road users that the government’s response would go beyond temporary relief, with immediate remedial measures being implemented alongside plans for permanent solutions to restore the roads and improve their long-term reliability.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to taking urgent corrective action while pursuing lasting solutions to the challenges affecting the two critical road corridors.
