Switzerland booked their place in the World Cup last 16 with a composed 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday, setting up a knockout clash with either Colombia or Ghana.
The Swiss controlled proceedings in Vancouver and struck once in each half to end Algeria’s campaign in convincing fashion.
The lively Johan Manzambi was the architect of the opening goal, bursting down the left flank before delivering a low cross for Breel Embolo to tap home from close range.
Switzerland doubled their lead less than a minute into the second half. Dan Ndoye pounced on a weak clearance from Rafik Belghali, brought the ball under control and fired through a crowded penalty area.
Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane got a hand to the shot but could not keep it out on a bitterly disappointing night for the North Africans.
The defeat means Algeria join Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and South Africa in exiting the tournament at the last-32 stage.
Morocco are the only African nation to have reached the last 16.
