Senegal have parted ways with head coach Pape Thiaw following the team’s elimination from the World Cup, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced on Sunday.
The FSF said its executive committee had decided to begin the process of terminating the contracts of Thiaw and his entire coaching staff.
“Following a meeting of the executive committee, it was decided to initiate proceedings to relieve national team coach Pape Thiaw, as well as the entire coaching staff, of their duties,” the federation said in a statement.
FSF president Abdoulaye Fall is expected to hold a press conference on Monday to explain the reasons behind the decision and outline the team’s future direction.
Thiaw, 45, a former Senegal international, was appointed head coach in 2024 but was unable to deliver the desired results at the World Cup.
The Lions of Teranga endured a difficult group stage, losing to France and Norway before a 5-0 victory over Iraq secured their qualification for the knockout rounds.
Their tournament ended in the last 32 after a dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat by Belgium, despite Senegal holding a 2-0 lead until the 86th minute.
Thiaw had guided Senegal to the Africa Cup of Nations final in January, but the team were later stripped of the title as punishment for walking off the pitch during a chaotic final against Morocco.
