Gunmen abduct students during NECO exam in Borno, kill teacher

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted an unspecified number of students from Government Day Secondary School in Lassa town, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack occurred on Monday morning while students were sitting for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) organised by the National Examinations Council (NECO).

One teacher was killed during the incident, while another sustained injuries.

Residents who spoke to journalists said the attackers stormed the community in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic.

According to them, Nigerian Army troops stationed in the area had reportedly left on patrol to Uba, a community about 16 kilometres away, shortly before the attack.

“The soldiers were not around when the terrorists invaded. They came in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic everywhere,” a resident said. “They took away students writing NECO and their teachers.”

The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident and said several students were still missing following the attack.
