Iran twice came from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Monday in a dramatic World Cup opener that unfolded against a backdrop of political tensions, protests and diplomatic challenges.

For Iran, simply taking the field at Los Angeles Stadium was a significant moment after months of strained relations and military conflict between Tehran and Washington had cast doubt over the team’s participation in the tournament.

Once the action began, however, Iran’s focus shifted to football as they battled back on two occasions after falling behind to goals from New Zealand forward Elijah Just.

Backed by a passionate pro-Iran crowd that largely drowned out demonstrations from anti-government protesters, Team Melli secured a valuable point thanks to strikes from Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebi.

Iran’s road to the World Cup had been anything but smooth. The team faced visa delays and travel complications before eventually relocating their training camp to Mexico at short notice ahead of the tournament.

Outside the stadium, hundreds of protesters opposed to Iran’s ruling government gathered to voice their dissent, arguing that the national team did not represent the Iranian people. Inside the venue, political tensions remained visible, with some fans displaying anti-government symbols despite FIFA regulations prohibiting political messages. Iran’s national anthem was met with a mixture of cheers and boos before kick-off.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei had urged his players to ignore the distractions, insisting on the eve of the match that they would not “pay attention to any of the hype.”

Yet Iran suffered an early setback when New Zealand struck in the seventh minute through a well-executed counterattack orchestrated by veteran striker Chris Wood.

The Nottingham Forest forward expertly controlled a long ball before releasing Elijah Just, who combined neatly with Sarpreet Singh and Wood before firing a powerful volley beyond the goalkeeper to give the Kiwis an early lead.

Iran responded positively and nearly equalised midway through the first half when star striker Mehdi Taremi rattled the post with a powerful long-range effort. They came close again moments later after goalkeeper Max Crocombe was dispossessed outside his penalty area, but the resulting attempt drifted agonisingly wide.

Their pressure finally paid off in the 32nd minute. A clever move involving Saman Ghoddos and Shahriyar Moghanlou ended with Rezaeian reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the box to level the scores.

Iran thought they had completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time when Ali Nemati headed into the net, but the defender’s effort was correctly ruled out for offside.

New Zealand regained the advantage 10 minutes into the second half. Liberato Cacace won possession near the halfway line before Chris Wood combined brilliantly with Just, who finished clinically to register his second goal of the evening.

But Iran responded once more. In the 64th minute, Rezaeian turned provider with a pinpoint cross that was met by Mohebi, whose powerful header clipped the inside of the post on its way into the net.

The final half-hour belonged largely to Iran as they pushed relentlessly for a winner. However, a mixture of wasteful finishing and determined New Zealand defending ensured the scores remained level until the final whistle.

The result leaves Iran with work to do if they are to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history. However, the draw may prove less damaging given that fellow Group G contenders Egypt and Belgium also shared the points in their opening fixture.

For New Zealand, meanwhile, the search for a first-ever World Cup victory continues, although the spirited performance against one of Asia’s strongest sides will provide plenty of encouragement for the matches ahead.
