Manchester United secured a return to Champions League football as Kobbie Mainoo’s late strike sealed a thrilling 3–2 victory over rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

United raced into a two-goal lead inside 15 minutes through Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško, but were pegged back after the break as Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo struck for Liverpool. Mainoo, however, had the final say, rifling home from the edge of the box to cap a pulsating contest.

The win strengthens Michael Carrick’s case to remain in charge beyond the season, with United’s resurgence continuing under his leadership since taking over in January.

Mainoo has been central to that revival. The England midfielder, recently rewarded with a new five-year contract, marked the occasion with a composed finish to decide the match.

Third-placed United now move six points clear of Liverpool and are assured of a top-five finish, confirming their place in next season’s Champions League. Despite the defeat—Liverpool’s 11th of the campaign—Arne Slot’s side remain well positioned to qualify, needing just three points from their remaining three matches.

Liverpool arrived at Old Trafford without key forwards Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak due to injury, and United capitalised early.

Cunha opened the scoring with a strike from distance that deflected off Alexis Mac Allister, leaving goalkeeper Freddie Woodman helpless. United doubled their lead moments later when Šeško bundled home from close range after Bruno Fernandes’ header back across goal.

Fernandes nearly added a third before the break, firing narrowly wide, while Liverpool hinted at a response as Gakpo curled an effort off target after slicing through United’s midfield.

The visitors came out with renewed intensity in the second half. Szoboszlai sparked the comeback, capitalising on a loose pass from substitute Amad Diallo and driving forward unchallenged before finishing calmly.

Liverpool equalised soon after, punishing another United error. Mac Allister intercepted Senne Lammens’ pass, combined with Szoboszlai, and Gakpo applied a simple finish.

With both sides pushing for a winner, the game opened up dramatically. United eventually seized their moment when Mac Allister’s poor clearance fell to Mainoo, who drilled a low shot into the corner to settle the contest.

The victory completes United’s first league double over Liverpool since the 2015–16 season and marks a significant turnaround from last year, when Liverpool finished 14 places and 42 points ahead en route to equalling United’s record of 20 league titles.

Carrick has also guided United to wins over Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea during his short tenure, with Champions League qualification now secured—strengthening his case to remain at the helm.
