The Labour Party has elected Nenadi Usman as its National Chairman at its national convention held in Umuahia, Abia State, on Tuesday.
The development was announced in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa.
Also elected into the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) were Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary; Mrs. Nike Oriola as Deputy National Chairman; Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary; Mrs. Oluchi Oparah as National Organising Secretary; Comrade Anslem Eragbe as National Financial Secretary; and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader, among others.
The newly elected officials were subsequently sworn in and have assumed office.
Usman, a former Minister of Finance and senator, had earlier served as Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee following her appointment at a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in September 2024.
According to the statement, her leadership had already received backing from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in line with a Federal High Court judgment delivered in January 2026 and upheld by the Court of Appeal in April.
The party described Usman as an experienced administrator whose leadership would be critical as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections. It noted that the Labour Party aims to build on its performance in the 2023 polls and strengthen its position as a major political force.
In her acceptance speech, Usman thanked party members for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to reposition the party for greater success. She also emphasised the need for unity, reconciliation, and internal cohesion ahead of the next election cycle.
She commended Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for his leadership and support, assuring members that she would justify the trust placed in her.
In his remarks, Otti urged the new National Working Committee to provide purposeful leadership and deepen the party’s structures across the country.
