The Federal Government has approved an increase in peculiar allowances and other welfare benefits for civil servants, a move aimed at boosting take-home pay and improving morale across the public service.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja.
She said the increment applies to workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), ensuring a broad-based impact across various cadres.
According to Walson-Jack, the revised allowances have been structured to cut across all grade levels, resulting in improved earnings for both senior and junior officers.
In addition, the government approved a comprehensive review of key allowances, including duty tour allowance (DTA), estacode, and book allowance. She noted that nearly all allowances captured in the Public Service Rules have been updated.
One of the major changes is the approval of 100 per cent DTA for civil servants attending approved training programmes, regardless of whether travel is involved.
“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she said.
Beyond salary-related adjustments, the Federal Government also introduced an exit benefit scheme for retiring civil servants under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The scheme guarantees 100 per cent of a retiree’s full emoluments as an exit package, in addition to their pension, and will take effect from January 1, 2026.
Walson-Jack said the initiative is designed to enhance dignity in retirement, stressing that public servants should not leave service without adequate financial support.
The government also confirmed the operationalisation of the Employee Compensation Scheme, which provides financial protection for workers who suffer job-related injuries or death.
The reforms come amid growing calls from labour unions for improved welfare as rising living costs continue to put pressure on workers. They also follow a salary increase of between 25 and 35 per cent approved about two years ago for civil servants across multiple salary structures, including CONPSS, CONRAISS, CONPOSS, CONPASS, CONICCS, and CONAFSS.
Support for Oyo workers
Meanwhile, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved a ₦10,000 monthly transportation support allowance for civil servants in the state to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
Makinde said the intervention, which took effect in March 2026, will run for an initial period of three months.
According to him, the measure is part of the state government’s response to increasing transportation costs and is intended to ease the financial burden on workers while ensuring uninterrupted service delivery across ministries, departments, and agencies.
“This support is a direct response to the realities our workers are facing,” the governor said. “We understand that transportation costs have gone up significantly, and as a government, we must act to ease that burden.”
