The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of efforts to strengthen discipline and enhance operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, announced the development in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, describing it as a key step in ongoing reforms aimed at refocusing the unit on its core mandate and improving oversight across commands and formations.
According to him, the reorganisation has streamlined and reinforced the unit to enable proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations nationwide.
“The restructured framework harmonises critical investigative and monitoring functions in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda,” he said.
Placid noted that the initiative is designed to promote professionalism, discipline, and accountability within the Force, adding that the Monitoring Unit will play a central role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring compliance at all levels.
As part of the overhaul, the Inspector-General also approved a leadership change, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar to head the restructured unit.
Abubakar previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, where he was involved in several high-profile investigations and worked with state authorities to strengthen investigative processes and operational effectiveness.
