Hayatu-Deen dumps PDP for ADC, cites national issues

Ex-presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and a shrinking democratic space in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Hayatu-Deen said his decision was driven by the need to align with a platform capable of delivering meaningful change.

“Like many Nigerians, I want a safer and more prosperous future, but the country faces fundamental challenges that continue to be ignored,” he said.

He recalled entering politics in 2022 to contest the PDP presidential ticket, motivated by a desire to contribute to national development in what he described as a “wide-open democratic space.” However, he noted that those expectations have since been met with “bitter disappointment.”

“This is why I have decided to join the ADC, which I believe is a viable vehicle for change,” he added.

The former banker said Nigerians are increasingly demanding a government that addresses critical issues such as insecurity, rising living costs, and unemployment.

“Across the country, people are calling for a steady, credible alternative that can tackle insecurity, reduce the cost of living, and create jobs,” he said.

Hayatu-Deen also expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that space for dissent and opposition is narrowing.

“Voices are being stifled, institutions are under strain, and the space for credible opposition is being systematically eroded. Democracy must offer Nigerians real choices,” he said.

He pledged to work for the ADC’s success ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“From now until 2027, I will campaign actively as a party member to help the ADC win and deliver the better future Nigerians deserve,” he stated.

Hayatu-Deen, a former chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, had contested for the PDP presidential ticket ahead of the 2023 elections but later withdrew, citing concerns over the monetisation of the process.Hayatu-Deen dumps PDP for ADC, cites national concerns
