The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially flagged off the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which had been suspended for about ten years following a court order on movement restrictions.
At the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu announced that the exercise will hold from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on the last Saturday of every month, aiming to keep the state clean and promote civic responsibility.
He urged residents not to litter while awaiting waste pickups by Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators in their localities.
The Governor clarified that movement will not be restricted, but enforcement measures will ensure the exercise achieves its objectives. He stressed that environmental responsibility was once a core part of Lagosians’ daily lives.
“It reinforced a simple but important principle: a clean city depends not only on government systems, but also on the discipline and cooperation of its residents,” he said.
“Today’s flag-off is a renewed call to civic responsibility. It presents an opportunity to revive environmental consciousness in our communities, driven by awareness, partnership, and voluntary participation.”
Sanwo-Olu further emphasised that the state government will continue to strengthen waste management systems, improve drainage infrastructure, and support environmental enforcement across Lagos.
