Tinubu orders immediate release of funds for space assets maintenance

President Bola Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate release of approved funds for the maintenance and development of Nigeria’s space assets, in line with the National Space Policy and Programme.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the implementation of the revised 25-year roadmap for space development, emphasizing the role of space technology in national growth, security, and economic diversification.

“I hereby approve that the cost of implementing the revised 25-year roadmap for the national space policy be forwarded to the Federal Executive Council for consideration and approval,” he said.

The President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, made the announcement during the first meeting of the National Space Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“Nigeria will not watch the new frontier unfold from the sidelines. We will participate, compete, and contribute. Our space ambitions must deliver tangible outcomes, accountability, and national value,” he added.

Highlighting the practical benefits of space technology, President Tinubu said: “We are funding precision agriculture, early warning systems for floods and fires, smarter cities, safer skies, robust communications, and a digital economy that can compete globally. Space investment strengthens national security and technological advancement.”

The President also urged the Nigerian Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to ensure responsible use of space assets over Nigeria, enforce the space regulation and spectrum management framework, and collaborate with all MDAs, stakeholders, and private sector actors. He emphasized that the Federal Ministry of Finance must ensure timely release of funds for these purposes.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, described the council meeting as historic, noting landmark decisions to strengthen the nation’s space ecosystem. These included the approval of updated conditions of service for NASRDA staff to retain top local talent and align with international standards.

A working group of space experts will be established to implement the revised 25-year space roadmap. Key members will include NASRDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Defence Space Agency, NIGCOMSAT, and other stakeholders.

The council also approved the development and operationalization of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Space Centre in Ekpe, which will enable Nigeria to launch and maintain satellites independently, reducing reliance on foreign expertise.
