The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted reports claiming that the Federal Government directed it to suspend enforcement of the ban on sachet and PET-bottled alcohol.
Earlier this month, the agency began enforcing a nationwide prohibition on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles as part of measures aimed at protecting public health.
However, reports circulating on social media on Wednesday alleged that NAFDAC had been instructed to halt implementation of the ban.
In a statement signed by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency described the claims as “false” and “misleading,” stressing that no such directive had been issued by the Federal Government.
“NAFDAC operates strictly within the ambit of its statutory mandate and in alignment with duly communicated Federal Government policies and directives,” the statement read.
“At no time has the Agency received any formal directive ordering the suspension of its regulatory or enforcement activities in respect of sachet alcohol products.”
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring regulatory compliance, noting that any significant policy decisions would be officially communicated through its authorised platforms.
NAFDAC urged the public, industry stakeholders, and the media to disregard the reports and rely solely on verified information from official government channels.
It also cautioned against the spread of unverified claims, warning that misinformation could trigger unnecessary public anxiety, economic uncertainty, or misinterpretation of government policy.
“NAFDAC remains steadfast in its commitment to public health, economic stability, and national interest,” the statement added.
