Atletico Madrid have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign 28-year-old Nigerian international Ademola Lookman.
“(The clubs) have agreed to the transfer of 28-year-old Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, who is already in Madrid,” Atletico said in a statement. “The agreement is pending a medical examination and the signing of his contract.”
Lookman, who famously scored a hat-trick as Atalanta defeated Bayer Leverkusen to lift the Europa League in 2024, is reported to cost Atletico around €40 million ($47.5 million).
The winger was also instrumental in Nigeria’s standout campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. This season, he has scored three goals in 19 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta.
Born in London, Lookman began his career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Everton. After a loan spell at RB Leipzig, he signed permanently for the German side in 2019, later returning to England on loan with Fulham and Leicester City, before joining Atalanta in 2022.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone has been seeking reinforcements following Giacomo Raspadori’s departure to Atalanta and Conor Gallagher’s winter move to Tottenham. With Julian Alvarez struggling to find the net, failing to score in his last 11 La Liga games, the addition of Lookman is expected to bolster Atletico’s attacking options.
