The Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday called on the Chief Judge to establish a panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The call came after a unanimous vote by the lawmakers, who also vowed to continue the impeachment process.
Earlier, the assembly held a live press conference in Port Harcourt, where members accused Fubara of allegedly using blackmail and undermining public trust.
Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol told journalists that the governor lacked the credibility to address the crisis affecting the oil-rich state, accusing him of violating the 1999 Constitution and intimidating parliament.
“The parliament is left with no choice but to exercise its legislative powers and consider impeachment,” Maol said.
The lawmakers also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for intervening in the crisis and urged Speaker Martin Amaewhule to reconvene the House.
Notably, four members who had previously called for a political solution recanted their position and pledged support for the continuation of the impeachment process.
Shortly after the press conference, the lawmakers proceeded to the chambers to commence a parliamentary session.
During plenary, members unanimously voted to back an investigation into the allegations against Fubara and his deputy.
“This vote clearly shows the decision of the House,” Amaewhule said, urging the Chief Judge to set up a panel of investigation.
