Gold, silver hit records after US probe targets fed

Gold and silver surged to record highs after the US Justice Department reportedly targeted the Federal Reserve in an investigation, stoking fears over the central bank’s independence and boosting demand for safe-haven assets.

Gold jumped toward $4,600 an ounce, while silver climbed to nearly $85 for the first time, after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell warned that a potential criminal indictment formed part of President Donald Trump’s broader pressure campaign aimed at influencing monetary policy decisions.
