Nottingham Forest stunned Liverpool with a 3-0 victory at Anfield on Saturday, deepening the champions’ Premier League woes.
The defeat marked Liverpool’s sixth loss in their last seven league matches, leaving them eight points behind leaders Arsenal.
Brazilian defender Murillo opened the scoring in the 33rd minute from a corner, before Nicolo Savona doubled Forest’s lead early in the second half. Morgan Gibbs-White sealed the win 12 minutes from time, following up on a save by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson from Omari Hutchinson’s shot.
For the second consecutive season, Forest have defeated Liverpool at Anfield. The Reds have now lost eight of their last 11 games in all competitions, including six of their last seven in the league. It is also the first time since 1965 that Liverpool have suffered back-to-back league defeats by a three-goal margin.
Manager Jürgen Klopp acknowledged that his squad remains affected by the tragic death of Diogo Jota in a car crash in Spain in July.
Once again, Liverpool struggled for inspiration and energy, delivering a lethargic display that leaves them 11th in the table, eight points adrift of Arsenal.
The Reds’ decline comes despite a summer spending spree exceeding £400 million ($523 million). Striker Alexander Isak, a British-record signing from Newcastle, was substituted in the second half during his fourth league start, remaining goalless in the Premier League.
