Armed bandits suspected to be members of the Lakurawa group have reportedly launched a deadly attack on a Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) camp in Maje, a community in the Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
According to local sources, the assailants invaded the facility in large numbers on Saturday night, opening fire indiscriminately on the officers stationed there.
One Customs officer was said to have been killed instantly before the attackers set the camp ablaze.
“The terrorists came in large numbers and started shooting sporadically. Everyone ran for safety,” a resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Telegraph.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kebbi State Government nor the Nigeria Customs Service had issued an official statement regarding the attack.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Kebbi Command, Muhammad Tajudeen, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, the attack actually happened, but you know it’s the doctor who can confirm if he is dead or not. We are currently at the hospital waiting for the doctor’s report. After that, I will let you know,” Tajudeen said.
The latest assault comes barely a week after the same group of armed bandits reportedly attacked parts of Bagudo Local Government Area, during which they abducted the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammad Sama’ila Bagudo.
The lawmaker regained his freedom on Saturday night after spending a week in captivity.
