Kylian Mbappe will undergo medical examinations on his right ankle when he joins his France teammates ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers, France coach Didier Deschamps said on Monday.
The national team captain sustained the injury late in Real Madrid’s 3-1 La Liga win over Villarreal on Saturday, raising concerns about his availability for France’s crucial qualifying matches against Azerbaijan and Iceland.
“I spoke with Kylian; he has a minor knock, but it’s nothing serious, otherwise he wouldn’t be here today,” Deschamps told reporters at the French squad’s Clairefontaine training base near Paris.
“We’ll take our time with the medical staff to assess the situation and monitor how it progresses.
“At this point, I don’t have any further updates. The players are expected to arrive around 4 p.m. (1400 GMT), and we’ll evaluate then as usual,” he added.
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is also set for medical tests after picking up an injury during the Reds’ 2-1 loss to Chelsea on Saturday.
Les Bleus currently top their qualifying group with two wins from two matches. They will host Azerbaijan on Friday at Paris Saint-Germain’s Parc des Princes before traveling to Iceland three days later.
