Visa, passport services to continue in Nigeria despite shutdown – US embassy

Despite the partial shutdown of the US government, the United States Embassy in Nigeria has assured that visa and passport services will continue.

The announcement, made via the Embassy’s official X handle on Wednesday, comes amid growing concerns among Nigerians over possible disruptions to visa processing, student travel plans, and other consular services.

“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, except for urgent safety and security information,” the statement read. It added that US embassies and consulates, including in Nigeria, will continue to provide passport and visa services as circumstances allow.

The Embassy also advised Nigerians to check travel.state.gov for the latest updates on consular services, including visa appointments and passport processing.

The US government shutdown, triggered by a budget impasse between lawmakers and President Donald Trump—centered around Democratic demands for healthcare funding—has forced many federal agencies to suspend operations. However, essential services such as the military, postal service, Social Security, and food stamps remain unaffected.

President Trump has defended the shutdown, saying it could help cut funding to programs tied to Democratic priorities.
