The Enugu State Police Command successfully foiled an armed robbery early Wednesday, August 6, 2025, neutralising one suspect and recovering firearms, ammunition, and other exhibits.
According to the police spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the incident occurred around 4:10 a.m. following a distress call to Independence Layout Police Division about a robbery in Premier Layout, Enugu.
Responding swiftly, the Divisional Police Officer deployed operatives alongside the Neighbourhood Watch Group to the scene. Upon arrival, the suspects opened fire, but police returned fire with superior force, neutralising one hoodlum—whose identity remains unknown—while the others fled.
A search of the scene and the suspect’s body uncovered a cut-to-size locally made single-barrel gun with one live cartridge, a locally fabricated Beretta pistol with one live round, a Nokia torch-button phone belonging to the suspect, two iPhones recovered from victims, a small red bag, a red-and-black torchlight, and ₦9,000 in ₦1,000 notes.
Further investigations on Friday, August 8, led to the recovery of a pump-action gun loaded with four live cartridges believed to have been abandoned nearby by fleeing suspects.
SP Ndukwe said the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating violent crime.
CP Giwa also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to support proactive crime prevention and control.
Residents are encouraged to report any security concerns or distress calls to the nearest police station, the command’s control room at 08032003702 or 08086671202, or the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre on 112.
