Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has honoured Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin with ₦30 million and a house for her exceptional performance at the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The announcement was made on Monday during a civic reception held in Akure, the state capital, to celebrate Ondo State indigenes who were part of the victorious Super Falcons squad at the tournament in Morocco last month.
In addition to Demehin, the governor also awarded ₦15 million each to the team’s media officer, Mary Akinsola, and team secretary, Mary Oduboku, in recognition of their vital contributions to Nigeria’s historic win.
Governor Aiyedatiwa said, “This is a proud moment for Ondo State. Tosin Demehin has shone brilliantly on the continental stage and brought immense pride to our people. As a token of our appreciation, the state government is awarding her ₦30 million and a house in Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile.”
Hailing from Ilaje Local Government Area, Demehin was described by the governor as a shining example of talent, discipline, and resilience.
“I am thrilled to welcome home our brave daughters whose dedication, hard work, and team spirit secured this victory. You have not only brought glory to Nigeria but also honoured Ondo State,” Aiyedatiwa added.
The governor also lauded Akinsola and Oduboku—both from the state’s southern senatorial district—for their key support roles during the Falcons’ campaign.
Reaffirming his commitment to sports development and youth empowerment, Aiyedatiwa said,
“We will continue to invest in young talents, create enabling environments, and provide the necessary resources for them to excel, especially in sports.”
He further promised maximum support for the Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, aiming to facilitate the team’s swift return to the nation’s premier league.
Expressing appreciation, Aiyedatiwa also thanked President Bola Tinubu for honouring the Super Falcons at the national level, highlighting that such recognition significantly boosts athletes’ morale across Nigeria.
In her response, Tosin Demehin expressed heartfelt gratitude to the governor and the people of Ondo State for their warm reception and generous reward.
“Receiving this honour from my home state means the world to me. As a former Sunshine Queens player, I am aware of the immense potential for women’s football here. This support inspires hope for many young girls who share similar dreams,” she said.
Demehin called on all stakeholders to unite in supporting the growth of women’s football in Ondo State, emphasizing that advancing Nigerian football—both men’s and women’s—is a collective responsibility.
