WAEC denies cancelling 2025 WASSCE, results to be released August 4

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has dismissed circulating claims about the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Sunday, WAEC described the reports as “false and mischievous,” urging the public to disregard them.

The Council clarified that rumors alleging the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC jointly cancelled all exam papers due to widespread malpractice, question paper leaks, and unauthorized digital dissemination are completely unfounded.

The statement read, “The attention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all papers written during the just concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025. The said press statement, dated Saturday, July 19, 2025, circulating on social media, claims the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, cancelled the examination due to widespread malpractice and coordinated leakage of question papers.

“WAEC Management unequivocally states that this spurious statement did not originate from the Council. The examination has not been cancelled. While the source of this false information is unknown, it is clear that mischief-makers aim to tarnish the Council’s reputation and create confusion and panic among candidates.”

WAEC further revealed that marking of the exam scripts has been completed, with results scheduled for release on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.

The Council warned the public against trusting unverified sources and emphasized that all official information is shared only through WAEC’s verified social media accounts and accredited media outlets. “All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the statement added.

This clarification follows growing concerns among students and parents after the false rumor went viral.
