Pope Francis has died at the age of 88 following complications from a stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure, according to his death certificate released by the Vatican on Monday.
The pontiff passed away at 7:35 a.m. local time (0535 GMT) in his apartment at the Santa Marta residence within Vatican City. His death came nearly a month after he was discharged from a five-week hospital stay, during which he battled a severe case of double pneumonia.
The official death certificate states the cause of death as “cerebral stroke, coma, irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.” It also noted that the Pope had suffered a previous episode of acute respiratory failure during his hospitalization.
Previously undisclosed health conditions were also revealed in the certificate, including arterial hypertension, multiple bronchiectasis, and Type 2 diabetes.
The document was signed by Professor Andrea Arcangeli, Director of Health of the Vatican City State.
