Senate President, Godswill Akpabio
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing the Edo Central Senatorial District, vacant.

This follows Okpebholo’s election as Governor of Edo State, prompting his farewell from the 10th Senate. Akpabio also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election as soon as possible to fill the vacant seat, ensuring continued representation for the people of Edo Central in the Senate.

The declaration was made after a valedictory session held in honor of Okpebholo by the Senate. Akpabio praised the outgoing senator, urging him to uphold his legacy of service as he takes on his new role as governor.

“This is an emotional moment for me,” Okpebholo said. “From the time I joined this 10th Senate in June 2023, every moment in the red chambers has been unforgettable. We saw ourselves as pioneers of democracy, working toward the nation’s best interests. In less than a year, I left to pursue my own dream of becoming governor. Today, I am the Governor of Edo State.”

He emphasized the crucial role his colleagues played in his success, stating, “There’s no way my story can be told without acknowledging my distinguished colleagues here. Their support, advice, and prayers were invaluable.”

Akpabio expressed gratitude to several key figures, including Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and other principal officers for their wisdom, encouragement, and camaraderie throughout his tenure.

Okpebholo, in his valedictory speech, reflected on the deep bonds he had formed with his fellow senators. “The relationships we built here are invaluable,” he said. “My time in the Senate has ignited my passion for good governance, especially in areas like infrastructure, security, education, and healthcare, which will guide me in my new role as governor.”

He also expressed gratitude to close friends in the Senate, including Senators Kaka Shehu Lawan, Babangida Husseini Uba, and Abdulaziz Yari, acknowledging their support during his political journey.
