Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension for leaving the Portugal national team camp during the UEFA Nations League, the country’s football federation (FPF) announced on Monday.
The 41-year-old forward left the squad on September 30 after reportedly becoming frustrated over his playing time under coach Jorge Jesus.
Ronaldo was initially made to warm up as a substitute during Portugal’s match against Norway on September 27 but was not brought on. He later learned that he would not start against Denmark on October 1.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star subsequently accused Jesus of breaking his promise to give him playing time.
Earlier in October, Ronaldo apologised to supporters, saying he would accept whatever punishment the federation imposed. In addition to the suspension, he was fined €255 ($286).
The sanction represents the minimum penalty under the FPF’s regulations, which provide for suspensions ranging from one to six months for players who leave the national team without authorisation.
Ronaldo’s suspension took effect on the day of Portugal’s match against Denmark, meaning he had already served 19 days of the ban by Monday and was expected to complete it by the end of October.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and record appearance-maker.
Despite his absence, Portugal won all four of their Nations League matches and secured qualification for the quarter-finals with two games to spare.
Portugal are scheduled to host Denmark on November 14 before travelling to face Wales on November 17 in their final two Nations League Group A4 fixtures. Ronaldo is expected to have completed his suspension before both matches.
In explaining its decision, the FPF disciplinary committee cited “the remorse shown in the statement” Ronaldo issued on October 6, in which he acknowledged his mistake and expressed his willingness to accept the consequences.
