The Super Eagles suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Bissau.
The defeat was coach Eric Chelle’s first since taking charge of the Nigerian national team.
Guinea-Bissau took the lead in the 15th minute when Franculino Dju curled a fine effort into the far corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria struggled to create a response as the hosts held on to their advantage through to half-time.
Chelle made two changes at the break, introducing Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi as Nigeria looked to turn the game around.
But Guinea-Bissau extended their lead in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé, leaving the Super Eagles with a difficult task.
Nigeria came close to pulling a goal back late on, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje produced a close-range save to deny George Ilenikhena in the 87th minute.
Álvaro Djaló then sealed the victory for the hosts with a third goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The result leaves Guinea-Bissau top of Group L with six points from two matches, following their earlier 2-0 victory over Tanzania.
Nigeria remain on three points after their 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar in their opening qualifier.
The Super Eagles will now look to bounce back as their qualification campaign continues.
