The Senator representing Kano Central, Rufai Sani Hanga, has resigned from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ending months of speculation over his future in the party.
Hanga, who also serves as the Senate’s Deputy Minority Whip, announced his decision in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the NDC in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The senator did not disclose his next political destination.
In the letter, Hanga said he was leaving the party for personal reasons, explaining that he wanted to step away from partisan politics to focus on personal engagements that had been affected by his political commitments.
“I have decided to withdraw my membership of the party to enable me concentrate on some of my personal activities, which have been affected,” he stated.
His resignation comes amid prolonged speculation about his political future following reports of internal disagreements within the NDC in Kano.
The speculation intensified after Hanga lost the party’s ticket for the Kano Central Senatorial District during its last primary election, with the ticket going to Yusuf Gawuna, a relatively new member of the party.
Despite the rumours surrounding his exit, Hanga made no reference to any internal dispute in his resignation letter and did not indicate whether he intends to join another political party.
His departure has, however, fuelled fresh speculation that he may be headed to the All Progressives Congress (APC), following separate meetings in recent weeks with prominent APC figures, including the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and President Bola Tinubu.
Political interest in Hanga’s next move also grew after he met with Tinubu and later said during a radio programme that although he expected the President to win re-election, his party would face an uphill battle in Kano State.
