Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney-General of the Federation, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections, following his adoption as the party’s consensus aspirant.
In a statement released on Sunday through his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami also announced the party’s senatorial candidates for the state and expressed appreciation to party leaders for their support.
The former minister, who recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the ADC, said the consensus arrangement reflected broad consultations within the party.
“I sincerely appreciate the confidence and support shown by leaders, stakeholders, and supporters of the African Democratic Congress in Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.
According to the statement, Malami will fly the ADC flag as governorship candidate, while retired Major General Aminu Bande was affirmed as the party’s candidate for Kebbi Central Senatorial District.
The ADC also named retired Deputy Comptroller-General Ibrahim Muhammad Mera for Kebbi North and Garba Danjuma Limi for Kebbi South Senatorial District.
Malami said the party remains committed to “purposeful leadership, good governance, justice, security, and sustainable development” in Kebbi State and across Nigeria.
He added that unity within the party would be central to its political strategy, saying: “Together, with unity and determination, we shall build a more prosperous future for generations to come.”
Malami emerged unopposed in the ADC primary as the consensus candidate and is expected to face incumbent Governor Nasir Idris of the APC in the 2027 governorship election.
His emergence comes amid rising political tension in Kebbi State, with both camps trading accusations over insecurity, governance, and corruption in recent weeks.
Since joining the ADC, Malami has criticised the state government over security challenges and economic conditions, while the Idris administration has accused him of poor governance and political opportunism during his tenure as Attorney-General under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
