Lagos opens new driver training centres in Oshodi, Apapa

The Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI) has opened two additional training centres in Oshodi and Apapa to meet growing demand for driver education and road safety training across the state.

The new facilities are located at the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Secretariat in Oshodi and at No. 5 Adele Road, off Warehouse Road, Apapa.

Speaking during an inspection of the centres, LASDRI General Manager Afusat Tiamiyu said the locations were strategically chosen because of the heavy traffic and high volume of vehicular activity along the Oshodi and Apapa corridors.

She noted that motorists operating in the areas require specialised training to safely navigate dense traffic, reduce the risk of accidents and comply with traffic regulations.

According to Tiamiyu, the institute is facing increasing demand for “structured, comprehensive training” that equips drivers with practical vehicle-handling skills, defensive driving techniques and a sound understanding of traffic laws.

She stressed that formal driver education remains critical in helping motorists understand road signs, maintain lane discipline and comply with traffic regulations, thereby reducing the risk of sanctions and vehicle impoundment.

Tiamiyu added that professional training also enhances the “hazard perception and spatial awareness” needed to drive safely around articulated trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles commonly seen in the Apapa corridor.

Describing Oshodi and Apapa as key commercial and transportation hubs, she said drivers in the areas must navigate complex traffic patterns, Bus Rapid Transit lanes and the activities of commercial bus operators.

She added that the centres would rely on experienced instructors to teach motorists how to anticipate unpredictable driving behaviour and manoeuvre safely through congested roads.

LASDRI Director Munirudeen Bajulaiye said each facility can accommodate about 25 trainees per session and includes administrative and convenience spaces.
