British-Nigerian Roseline Ogunro becomes new Mayor of Islington

The growing prominence of Nigerians in British public life was once again highlighted in London as Councillor Rosaline Ogunro was inaugurated as the new Mayor of Islington.

Her emergence comes just a year after Nigerian-born Jason Jackson made history as the borough’s first Nigerian-born mayor, underscoring the increasing civic and political influence of the Nigerian diaspora across the United Kingdom.

Ogunro, who has a strong background in community advocacy and broadcasting, assumes office at a time when local councils across Britain are facing mounting social and economic pressures.

She was elected councillor for St Peter’s and Canalside Ward in May 2022 and currently serves on both the Homes and Communities Scrutiny Committee and the Licensing Committee. Prior to her inauguration, she also served as Deputy Mayor of Islington.

According to Islington Labour, Ogunro has spent years working with voluntary organisations, including the Islington Citizens Advice Bureau, where she currently works part-time as an adviser.

She also previously worked in the marketing department of the London Symphony Orchestra as a Customer Service and Office Coordinator and sang in the orchestra’s Community Choir for more than two decades.

Beyond public service, Ogunro has a background in broadcasting and was appointed to the board of trustees of St Luke’s Centre in May 2022.

Her hobbies include singing, fashion design, sewing, and gardening.

Her inauguration adds to the growing list of Nigerians making significant strides in public service and leadership roles in the UK.

Earlier in January 2026, several Nigerians were recognised in King Charles III’s Honours List for their outstanding contributions across sectors including healthcare, academia, business, culture, philanthropy, and community development.

The honours highlighted the impact of Nigerians and people of Nigerian descent in fields such as medicine, education, entrepreneurship, civic leadership, and public service both within the UK and internationally.
