Bruno Fernandes sets new Premier League assist record

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has set a new outright Premier League record of 21 assists in a single season after providing the assist for Patrick Dorgu’s goal against Brighton on Sunday.

On the final day of the Premier League campaign, the match remained goalless until Fernandes’ corner in the 33rd minute was met by Dorgu, who powered home a header at the Amex Stadium.

The assist took Fernandes clear of the previous joint record of 20, held by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

The milestone adds to a remarkable individual season for the Portuguese playmaker, coming just a day after he was named Premier League Player of the Season. He had also previously been honoured with the Football Writers’ Association award.

“I want collective awards more than anything,” Fernandes said last week. “But knowing that your job is being recognised by many people, a lot of players came out and said I was player of the season, for that I am very grateful.”

The 31-year-old has also contributed eight league goals this term, with Manchester United enjoying a strong finish to the campaign under Michael Carrick, climbing to third place and securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
