Flick extends contract with Barcelona until 2028

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has confirmed that he has signed a new contract extension with the club, keeping him at the Catalan side until 2028 with an option for a further season, just days after securing back-to-back La Liga titles.

The 61-year-old German sealed his second Spanish league crown on Sunday after guiding Barcelona to a 2-0 victory over rivals Real Madrid at the Camp Nou.

“I am very happy, and what I have achieved gives me confidence to continue for one or two more years,” Flick said on Tuesday at a press conference ahead of Wednesday’s La Liga trip to Alavés.

“Many coaches would be happy to stay three or four years, but I think at Barça it is better to limit it. For now, I am under contract until 2028, and if everything goes well, we will extend it. It is a good agreement for both sides. I feel I am in the right place.”

Flick added that his immediate focus was to push Barcelona beyond 100 points in the league this season.

“Our goal is to reach 100 points, and to do that we must win all three remaining matches,” he said. “We have celebrated the title, but now we must continue to perform.”

Since arriving in the summer of 2024, Flick has delivered an impressive haul of silverware, winning two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, and two Spanish Super Cups in two seasons.

However, the Champions League — which he won with Bayern Munich in 2020 — has so far eluded him in Spain.

Barcelona were eliminated by Atletico Madrid in this season’s quarter-finals, while last year they suffered a dramatic 7-6 aggregate defeat to Inter Milan in the semi-finals.

“Everyone dreams of the Champions League,” Flick said. “We have tried, and we will keep trying. It is a commitment from us to reach the highest level and win more titles.”

He also expressed gratitude for the club’s trust and support.

“I am grateful for the confidence to continue,” he added.

Before joining Barcelona, Flick served as Joachim Löw’s assistant during Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph. He later enjoyed a highly successful spell as Bayern Munich head coach, winning multiple trophies between 2019 and 2021.

His subsequent tenure with the German national team lasted 25 matches before he became the first coach in history to be dismissed by the national side.

Appointed to replace Xavi at Barcelona, Flick has since restored stability and success to the club despite ongoing financial constraints.

As a player, the former defensive midfielder made 139 appearances for Bayern Munich, winning four Bundesliga titles.
