The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Sunday at about 5:00 pm around the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis in Benin City.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, preliminary findings showed that three occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLK — Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu — were driving out of the university when they were allegedly intercepted at the main gate in Ugbowo by another white GLK vehicle.

The statement said the occupants of the suspect vehicle lowered their windows and opened fire on the victims before fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

The attack left the occupants of the targeted vehicle with varying degrees of gunshot injuries. A female passerby, identified as Dorathy Ubah, was also reportedly struck during the incident.

Police operatives were swiftly mobilised to the scene and evacuated the victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for emergency treatment. One of the victims, Alexander Omogiate, was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty, while the others are currently receiving medical care.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation aimed at identifying and apprehending the fleeing suspects.

The command warned criminal elements operating within the state, particularly around tertiary institutions, to desist from violent crimes, stressing its resolve to rid Edo of criminal activity.

It assured residents that the perpetrators of the attack would be tracked down and prosecuted, adding that no effort would be spared in bringing them to justice. Members of the public with useful information were also urged to assist the investigation by reporting to the nearest police station or contacting emergency lines, with assurances of confidentiality.

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the shooting in strong terms.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary on Monday, the governor described the attack as “brazen and cold-blooded,” saying it was an affront to human dignity and a serious threat to public safety.

He extended condolences to the family and associates of the deceased, whose life, he said, was “senselessly cut short,” and assured that the state government would support efforts to ensure justice is served.
