The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday approved the nomination of Murtala Garo as Deputy Governor after considering and adopting the report of its ad hoc screening committee.
Garo’s confirmation followed the presentation of the committee’s findings by its chairman, Deputy Speaker Bello Butubutua, during plenary presided over by Speaker Jibril Falgore. The 12-member committee had been set up to assess the governor’s nominee and determine his suitability for the office.
Governor Abba Yusuf had earlier forwarded Garo’s name to the Assembly on April 22, requesting screening and confirmation in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which allows a state governor to appoint a deputy governor when a vacancy arises.
Presenting the report, Butubutua said the nominee was thoroughly screened and found qualified for the position. He added that the committee examined Garo’s academic qualifications, professional experience, and personal background, and found him fit for the role under the Assembly’s established procedures.
Garo, 48, is a seasoned political administrator with more than two decades of public service experience. His nomination follows the resignation of former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo in March 2026, which created the vacancy now filled.
