No new tax on vehicles – NRS

NRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji
The Nigeria Revenue Service has dismissed as false and misleading a viral infographic claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a new vehicle tax effective July 1.

In a statement issued by Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, Dr Zach Adedeji, and spokesperson for the service, Mr Dare Adekambi, the agency said the circulating material did not originate from any official government source.

The viral infographic alleged that owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles were required to pay an unspecified tax rate online or through designated banks and government agencies.

It also directed the public to a website, http://www.firs.gov.ng, which the NRS said is not its official portal. The agency clarified that its correct website is http://www.nrs.gov.ng.

Adekambi stressed that no new vehicle tax has been introduced by the Federal Government, urging Nigerians to disregard the information in circulation.

“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the service or any government agency,” he said.

He added that the false message appeared designed to mislead the public and urged citizens to rely only on verified government communication channels.

“Citizens are advised to disregard fabricated messages and rely on official platforms for accurate information on government policies,” the statement added.

The NRS further advised Nigerians to follow its official social media handles and website for authentic updates on tax-related matters.
