The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 12 people died in a road crash along the Benin–Auchi–Lokoja highway.
The accident occurred on Wednesday at Egono, near Ewu, according to the agency.
FRSC said the crash involved a truck carrying passengers and goods to Benin City. Fourteen people were injured, while others escaped unhurt.
Eyewitnesses reported that about 37 passengers were on board when the driver, allegedly speeding, attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre, lost control, and veered off the road before overturning and trapping occupants.
Spokesperson for the Edo State Command, Patricia Onwochei, attributed the crash to wrongful overtaking.
She added that one of the victims has been buried, while the remaining 11 bodies were deposited at the mortuary of St. Lazarus Hospital.
