President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, as part of efforts to expand police training capacity nationwide.
The President also approved a special take-off grant of ₦15 billion for the project, according to a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.
The move aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which provides for the expansion of the academy’s existing campus in Wudil into multiple campuses across the country.
“The intervention fund will be sourced from the TETFund 2026 allocation to finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets,” the statement said.
The decision to site the new campus in Erinja followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.
Deliberations at the meeting focused on student intake capacity, funding considerations, academic standards, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently undergoing expansion.
“President Tinubu believes the expansion will strengthen institutional governance, modern policing education, and national security,” the statement added.
The approval comes nearly five months after Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency in response to rising attacks and abductions, and authorised increased recruitment into the police and military.
As part of the directive, the President approved the recruitment of an additional 20,000 police officers and ordered the upgrade of training facilities nationwide.
He also authorised the use of National Youth Service Corps camps as temporary training depots and directed that officers withdrawn from VIP protection duties undergo accelerated retraining for redeployment to security-challenged areas.
